The challenge
People living in Zambia’s Western Province are trapped in a cycle of poverty. Now climate change is presenting even greater challenges.
Traditional cattle farmers struggle to find good quality grazing for their livestock and water supplies are drying up.
With no local animal health services, many cattle are weak or sick. Mortality is high. Selling prices are low.

The Mafisa Method
At Mafisa we work in collaboration with traditional farmers and the communities they live in, using a joined-up model which delivers long-term income security for all.
We focus on four connected areas of improvement:
HEALTHY CATTLE
Providing low cost animal healthcare so more animals survive to adulthood and produce more better-quality calves.
GOOD QUALITY GRASSLAND
Agreeing grazing plans, improving water supplies and reducing fire damage so grazing cattle get better nutrition.
FAIR MARKET ACCESS
Building buying centres so remote farmers can sell direct to the main players in Zambia’s successful beef industry.
CREATING OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL
Offering business development opportunities for the whole community so everyone commits to the project and shares the benefits.
